Looking for aviation maintenance schools in Florida?
You are in luck! Florida is one of those states with a strong aviation background. The aviation sector in this state is thriving. Not only does Florida host many aviation maintenance schools, they also have many flight schools, and all those airplanes require maintenance. The job market in FL is also strong. The hot and humid temps in the summer can be a challenge for many mechanics however but the winters are a nice break from the frigid temps of the north.
Tips for researching Aviation Maintenance Schools in Florida
Unless you planning on moving to be near a school, the choice of school will largely be based on;
- Location
- Price for courses
There are lots of choices for schools in Florida which a student should use to their advantage. Miami and Panama City both have technical high schools which may have a reduced tuition rate for adults. The only downside to some of the high school programs is that they tend to be a little longer because of summer break. The cost savings however can be significant.
While researching, visit each school you are considering. Each school listed is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration which means the course work and subject matter will be very similar. The FAA routinely visits these schools to ensure compliance. While the course work will be generally the same, there are some variables to consider while researching. they are;
- Student to teacher ratio
- How long is the course for A&P certification
- Do you need your own tools
- How old is the training aids you will be working on.
Lots of schools will boast some kind of job placement program that guarantees each graduate a job. I am very skeptical of any such claim and in reality, you really do not need a job placement program. If you are motivated and willing to network with new people, you will do better on your own anyways. Who will be the best promoter of yourself? You will be of course!
After Graduation
Finding the first job can be challenging for many new aircraft mechanics. This may be somewhat mitigated in Florida because of the stronger job market. In either case however, it is smart to try and gain experience while in school if possible. Even if the experience isn’t actually maintaining aircraft, as long as it is in a related industry such as baggage handler or aircraft fueler. This should help your resume and also give yourself a broader background. Employers like mechanics that can do just about anything. Read my tips on how to get aircraft mechanic experience here.
