Looking for Aircraft Mechanic Schools in New York?
You are in luck! The state of New York has lots of aircraft mechanic schools to choose from. New York has a strong aviation industry which lends well to both aircraft mechanic training but to also employment opportunities once graduated.
Finding the right aircraft mechanic school will largely depend on a few factors, such as;
- Cost of program to acquire the airframe and powerplant certificates
- Location of school
- Length of program
It is important to do proper research before choosing a school. While the subject matter will be very similar between schools, there are differences which one should consider before making a hard choice. The subject matter of the airframe powerplant curriculum is mainly dictated by the Federal Aviation Administration. This makes comparing schoo
ls a little easier since you can compare apples to apples in most cases. Some of the differences are listed about. Costs can very greatly between schools. Community colleges and high school programs seem to have lower prices. One of the downsides to high school programs is that often times the course may be a few months longer to complete since you must factor in summer break. Also most aviation technical high schools do not have a night class. Universities tend to have higher costs but offer more in the form of choices for classes. If you are interested in aviation management, community colleges or universities may be the best option. For the most part, most aircraft mechanics just looking to get their A and P license, any of the listed schools will be fine since they are all part 147 approved by the FAA.
Some of the other differences to compare between aviation mechanic schools in New York can be;
- Condition and age of training aids used during hands on training
- Do you need tools
- Night classes availability
- Teacher to student ratio
- Is job placement available
Be sure to ask questions when visiting the school to make sure you are comfortable with the program. Always be skeptical when promised guaranteed job placement after graduation.
While this may exists in some programs, I would not count on it. Typically new aircraft mechanics can face challenges landing their first job. Most employers want experience. There are ways to get work related experience for aircraft mechanics, read my blog for free tips on how to achieve this.
Networking and meeting new people still tends to be one of the hottest ways of landing that new job. Aviation is a tight nit group and personal relationships tend to carry lots of weight. Use this to your advantage and never be afraid to meet new people.
Some aviation mechanic schools will provide tools. This can be beneficial while first starting school. Eventually you will need to start a collection of tools. There are tool programs out there that give discounts to students. My favorite is Matco tools. My aircraft mechanic tool blog post describes how this program will help you. Start collecting the basics early, as tool purchasing can get expensive fast. Employers will expect you to be ready to hit the hangar floor when you get hired.
The art of maintaining aircraft is a skill that takes years to prefect. Remember, the A&P license is just the start. A good aircraft mechanic never stops learning hit trade. This industry is an exciting career with lots of potential to make good money. Use the list above to find aircraft mechanic schools in New York and get your career going!
